Everybody didn’t have access to the Democratic Party debate

The editor of Buzzflash at Truthout recently wrote that, “By offering the debates on television only to paid subscribers of television packages that included CNN and Fox News, the most important political interaction between candidates for president of the United States was, essentially, privatized.” If you’re living with a net-enabled digital device seemingly glued to your more »

New apartments planned for Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital campus

MARTA, luxury malls such as Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza, and even the Atlanta Braves want new apartment units in walking distance of their projects. Why not hospitals? In Sandy Springs, North American Properties plans to develop 305 apartments on the southern edge of Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital campus, according to the city. The project at Johnson Ferry and South Johnson Ferry roads would also include 10,350 square feet of medical and office space, and a park, the city says. Saint Joseph’s…

BC-Wake Forest preview

Addazio says he is waiting for one of the QBs to step up. He wants one guy to show him something more...something different from the other guy. BC fans want a sign too. We want to see that Addazio can adapt and can handle rough patches and can win the games he is supposed to win. Despite our offensive struggles, BC is favorite this week. If Addazio is a very good coach, he takes care of business at home. If we lose, we will have more questions than just who should be the next QB.

What's on my mind (not totally related to this game)
I don't want to keep going back to the Duke game, but there was a little wrinkle that I failed to mention that shows their coaches are doing a good job. If you recall after every questionable catch that went their way, Duke quickly ran to the line to start the next play. We see something similar with every NFL team. You don't see that urgency as often in college. Maybe because tempo is already part of most team's game plans. Maybe because the NFL has had replay longer. But I found it interesting that Duke reacted how they did. It showed that their players have good situational awareness and good sideline communications.

Three Simple Keys
1. Continue to stretch the field with deep throws. Despite their tendency to hang, flutter and miss their target, I still want Smith and Flutie attempting big throws downfield. Every once in a while you'll hit a big TD and at a minimum, you will keep their Safeties honest. I don't trust Flutie or Smith enough to pull off lots of short passes in heavy traffic.
2. Turn anything between the 50 and the Wake 25 into 4-down territory. Addazio can rationalize this ten different ways, but this is one area where the statistics show he's being too conservative. We can't make long field goals. We have an outstanding D. Every possession in that area should play call as if we are going for it. Run on third down if needed.
3. Get better blocking from the Tight Ends and Wide Receivers. There has been a lot of criticism of the OLine, but the biggest drop off between the first two year and this one is between the blocking of the WRs and Tight Ends. On other teams that might not be a big deal. For us, it is. We depend on those guys to engage the Linebackers and DBs who are crashing the line when we run.

Gambling Notes
-- Addazio is 12-6 at home
-- Addazio last started 0-3 in ACC play in 2013
-- Wake if 1-4 at Alumni as a member of the ACC
The current line is BC-7.5

Factoid
BC has scored only one touchdown in ACC play.

Scoreboard Watching
On Friday night, NC State travels to Virginia Tech. Aside from watching two future opponents and potentially the last days of Beamer Ball, I am also interested to see how VT manufactures offense. It hasn't been pretty for their OC Scot Loeffler. Prior to calling plays for Beamer, Loeffler coached under Daz at Temple.

I hope to see...
Sherman Alston get back in the groove. Addazio mentioned players pressing and it looks like that is an issue with Alston. He can be so dynamic. We just need to find him the right situations.

BC is in trouble if...
We don't score at least 20 points. 20 points seems pretty arbitrary on my part, especially given how good the Defense is. But I think that barrier represents a comfortable enough margin for BC to control and win the game. If we keep slogging along in low-scoring battles, every mistake is magnified and someone will steal at game at Alumni.

Bottom Line
Neither QB pulls away from the other, but they both look much better. BC also gets its first defensive touchdown of the year and mostly keeps Wake in check all day.
Final Score: BC 24, Wake 13

2 Secrets to Raising Money for SaaS Startups

The following article was written by Lisa Calhoun of Write2Market via our Guest Blogger Program.

SaaS startups preparing their story for investors face a few challenges most people don’t discuss up front, so this post is to help address that. Let’s begin with the easy stuff. Everyone acknowledges the typical SaaS early stage business challenges:

-finding the pain
-building the user base
-acquiring talent

However, it’s often the soft skills required for successful fundraising that can slow a company down.

SAAS STARTUP “SOFT CHALLENGES”

Vocabulary and the knowing how to ask for enough money are two big issues that SaaS startups face when raising a round. We encounter this early and often in our tech public relations practice as we prepare pitch decks and executive summaries. Often, half the battle for early-stage founders is learning to talk the talk. Many tech startups have a technical founder who is fluent in the latest code buzz but doesn’t have a strong working business vocabulary. For them, it may seem like there is a whole new vocabulary they have to come up to speed on when talking to investors. It’s crucial that they don’t resist it. Venture capitalists and angel investors speak about SaaS startups in very specific ways. This is a “language” worth learning before you field questions from VCs.

HOW TO TALK THE TALK

The vocabulary you need with savvy SaaS investors is specific and simple. To start, I recommend these helpful guidelines to basic definitions by entrepreneur-turned-VC David Skok. His post on detailed definitions for entrepreneurs is also excellent.

You can see in these simple equations some of the basic principles that investors, focused on risk and return, are interested in.

If you’re a SaaS company, talk the SaaS language. At the end of the day, of course, there are only GAAP revenue and bookings, but showing a handle on the metrics and talking like an informed SaaS founder will shorten the cycle from pitch to funding.

HOW TO ASK FOR (ENOUGH) MONEY

The second issue around raising real money as a SaaS startup is knowing how much you need. Most founders we encounter in the Southeast are doers. They are intent on that next 1,000 users or that particular feature they want to add to the product. This can lead to a short-sighted approach when it comes to the money you need.
Dharmesh Shah, co-founder at Hubspot, puts it like this:

SaaS companies often charge on a subscription basis — so cash comes in over time (often monthly). However, the acquisition cost is paid up front. The result is, even if you’re making margin on each sale, the faster a SaaS company is growing, the more cash it will need to fuel that growth.

Dharmesh discusses this in a popular blog post, so I refer you to reading that to get a deeper sense of why this matters from a seasoned SaaS entrepreneur. The gist is, if you think you need $1M, raise $5M. If you are confident you can really use $5M, raise $15M. Work the numbers out a couple year down the road, and you’ll start to see how SaaS startups, in particular, need not to be shy when they seek capital.
The metrics language you use and your understanding of what those metrics mean to your business are critical issues to grasp as you share your story with investors.

What Vegas thinks as we approach the season

Even as we hear good things about the young talent or add a transfer or two, the oddsmakers haven't really changed their opinion of BC. Sports Book Review still has us going under the 6-win mark and only beating Maine, Howard, Northern Illinois, Syracuse and Wake.

They also see BC starting out strong and then struggling as the second half of the season gets harder. I understand that logic, but think the backloaded schedule helps a young team like BC. I think pulling off an upset or two is more likely after gaining confidence early in the season.

I will have my season predictions in a week or two, but articles like this feed my optimism.

Braxton Miller and what could have been (but not really)

Everyone waited on Braxton Miller. He kept saying he was staying at Ohio State, but the football world didn't believe. To most it didn't make sense that he would fight for the QB spot with the national champs when he could waltz in as the starting QB at dozens of college programs. One of the recurring speculations was that he would end up at BC.

It made sense. BC needed a QB and the one-year success of Tyler Murphy was a great selling point. Then there was the Addazio-Meyer connection. BC doesn't run the same exact offense at the Buckeyes, but there are plenty of similarities. BC's current QBs were young and could wait behind Miller. I heard the talk too, but I don't think it ever got far. And now it all makes sense because Miller is staying at OSU and converting to H-Back.

In reading about Miller's decision, I think the reason he didn't transfer is that he couldn't have played QB for anyone. He still has labrum issues and won't be able to throw completely for two more months. A transfer can't be that effective if he cannot practice with his new team. By playing this hybrid position at Ohio State, he can learn routes and practice catching balls. He can also prepare to be an NFL receiver.

It would have been nice to have a healthy 5th year superstar transfer, but I am excited about Wade. He might not be as dynamic as Miller, but now we can hope for multiple very good seasons instead of another stopgap. (At least that is what I am telling myself.)

Buckhead CID Calls for a Pause in Park Plans

Since April, the Buckhead Community Improvement District (BCID) has been abuzz with preliminary plans to build a nine-acre park that would sit above GA 400 and the MARTA rail line—thus creating a park “out of thin air.” This week, however, members of the BCID board decided to postpone issuing RFPs (requests for proposal) for the project. Instead, they will hold a yet-to-be-scheduled work session to hammer out the proposed plan’s details and potential challenges.

The park would emulate the Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, which was built over an interstate highway. Since it opened in 2012, the $110 million park has attracted two million visitors in just two years and tripled the value of surrounding office space, according to its structural engineers, Jacobs Engineering Group. Based on the Klyde Warren Park’s success, Jacobs was hired by BCID to study the feasibility of creating a similar park in Buckhead.

In Jacobs’ preliminary rendering of the project, the park would connect to the Buckhead MARTA station and create a one-third-mile corridor from the Atlanta Financial Center on Peachtree Road to Lenox Road. The park would include a green plaza space at the Buckhead station’s main entrance and a central area with a series of gardens. The northern end of the park, which would link to the Lenox Road loop, would feature a performance area that would hold 4,000 to 7,000 people and include a small stage for performances. The Buckhead pedestrian bridge over 400, completed last year, would bisect the green space. The plan also shows a ramp over Lenox Road that could potentially link the park to the PATH400.

Initially enthusiastic about the park project, the BCID then realized the enormity of the undertaking—particularly its probable cost, estimated at $150-200 million. The organization thus decided to take a “breather” to consider the idea in greater detail. Bringing the park to fruition would likely require a public-private partnership, as happened with the Klyde Warren Park, 46 percent of which was funded by private contributions through a specially created foundation.

In addition to funding issues, BCID board members have expressed concerns about being diverted from their primary purpose, which is to manage transportation issues in Buckhead, and about possibly having to expand the BCID’s capacity in order to manage the park.

Fortunately, the project has no set timetable, and so the BCID’s slowed momentum will not prevent progress. Jacobs will continue to benchmark the visual plan with renderings and graphics before moving into the more precise feasibility study, which will be the next step if approved and funded by the BCID board. Meanwhile, the board will gather more information, including input from architect and engineering professionals who will conduct detailed planning, design, and cost studies. The board hopes to determine what the community wants in the park and to examine possible funding models, says Jim Durrett, executive director of the BCID.

If it proves feasible, a park like the proposed “park in the sky” would surely be an asset to Buckhead, just as Piedmont Park has been for Midtown. It would create a true live-work-play atmosphere in the heart of the Buckhead business district, thereby positioning Buckhead to become even more appealing to large corporations.  The “park out of thin air” could become the jewel in Buckhead’s already enviable crown.

UNC hires Crawley and other links

Former BC Women's Basketball Coach Sylvia Crawley is back in the ACC as an assistant at North Carolina. Because Women's Basketball doesn't get all that much attention, the Crawley tenure is often overlooked in how bad things got. Hopefully the rebuild is almost complete.

Olivier Hanlan's early struggles have disappointed some Jazz followers. If he cannot get more play in the Summer League, he's probably headed for the D-League.

Jay Paterno reached out to BC about staff jobs in the past. This came out as part of his lawsuit against the NCAA. He's been rejected by a number of Power 5 schools as well as James Madison. It is unclear if he talked to BC under Spaz or Addazio. As far as I know, Jay never enabled or ignored Sandusky's crimes. HE probably deserves another chance to prove himself as a coach. I don't see it happening at BC though...Addazio seems pretty committed to hiring from his own network.

Report: BC and North Dakota planning MSG game

It is good to be a BC fan in New York. New Yorker Eagles have been able to see the football and basketball teams locally numerous times. Now it looks like they will be able to see Hockey at Madison Square Garden. According to multiple reports, BC and North Dakota are in the final stages of scheduling a game the the New York arena in December 2016.

The game should do well at the box office. North Dakota fans are known for traveling and BC showed they could sell ticket in New York. Plus the hardcore BC Hockey fans will make a trip of it to see BC play in the famous arena. Confirmation of the game should come during this upcoming hockey season.

Hanifan signs and other links

The Hurricanes signed Noah Hanifan to a three-year contract with the standard AHL-NHL payouts. Good luck to him.

This Washington Post story on Jared Dudley starts with a BC anecdote. He only has a one-year deal in DC, but it seems like a good fit.

The BU alums won the Comm Ave Classic 7-5. The event raised over $55,000.

Atlanta Movie Reviews: Minions, Self/less, The Gallows, Amy

From gibberish-speaking creatures to the heartbreaking story of a star, this weekend is full of cinematic treats at Regal Atlantic Station!

A crazed spin-off film of Despicable Me, featuring the loveably awkward and cute Minions, should have been a sure bet from the first time audiences met the little guys. n their first feature-length adventure, aptly titled Minions, we learn the journey from the beginning of time to the 1960s as the little yellow guys, most notably three named Stuart, Kevin, and Bob, go on a search to find the most ruthless evil mastermind to serve. Scarlett Overkill becomes the nemesis they most admire and it’s a race for survival in posh London and other familiar locales to the very end. Featuring the voices of superstars like Sandra BullockMinions could easily become the family film hit of the summer. Missing the sentimental note that a film like Inside Out possesses, though, could hurt its chances in the long run.

While families will be packing the seats for Minions, a few adult-focused films will be hoping for a notice or two, as well. Ryan Reynolds stars in Self/less, a sci-fi thriller that isn’t receiving too many good remarks from critics, with many noting that the premise is promising, but the execution is lackluster.

Horror fans may be drawn to new flick The Gallows after its terrifying trailer debuted a few months ago. But, as is natural for scary films, critics are ripping apart the found-footage thrill ride. There are scares to be had here, but the film doesn’t quite live up to its pretentious plot.

And, lastly, but perhaps most notably, the documentary Amy is receiving high marks from critics and audiences worldwide. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May to a standing ovation. Following the rise and fall of Grammy award-winner Amy Winehouse, the film is eye-opening and troubling as you witness the star go from rebellious, good-natured teen, to a drug-addicted mess. While her music is mesmerizing, the journey to get there is terrifying and sad. This documentary is receiving lots of praise. Look for it to show up as a contender for next year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Addazio doesn't like 7 on 7s

As football becomes a year round sport, 7 on 7 camps and drills are the go to set up for many offseasons. One football guy close to our hearts doesn't think too much of the trend. Last week in an interview with a Tennessee radio station Addazio talked about a variety of BC-related issues and eventually gets to the 7 on 7s. This is what he said:

"You don’t know how people really perform until you put them in those pressure situations, so I equate it to 7 on 7. To me, the 7 on 7 drill in football is kind of a joke. The quarterbacks are throwing, there is no threat of being sacked, or being hit, and there’s really not a heavy contact threat in the back end.”

His argument makes sense. 7 on 7s improve timing or passing routes, but tell you little.

Is it any wonder that Addazio feels so much is missing from 7 on 7s? He's made his living with good line play and running the ball. Both aspects are neutered in passing drills.

Once again, Addazio is a good interview and I like his honesty on the hot topics in college football.

Fitz says Walker was involved in attempted ax of open records law

I’ll keep this brief. Here’s the headline: Scott Fitzgerald: Scott Walker’s office was involved with open records changes The most important thing to take away is that Fitz and the boys will make another effort to cut you and the world off from legislative records: “I think it’s something that there are many different entities more »

Jet’s Pizza

Jet's Pizza

Until recently I’d never tried Jet’s Pizza, a small chain out of Michigan with some locations around Atlanta. I’d never even heard of them until my brother told me about them, as there is one near his home in Smyrna. They have all kinds of pizza, but the square cut Detroit style is what we’re here to discuss. Specifically, the eight corner pizza with Turbo crust.

Eight corner means they split the pie into two halves so the edges are crispy on every piece. It’s the super greasy style bread that basically fries up in the pan, with the cheese seeping off the edge and getting crunchy and delicious, sort of frico style. The pizza is cooked hard and the pepperonis present excellent cuppage, almost burnt in a perfect way.

I won’t go on and on in detail, but it’s a glorious gut bomb, wrong in all the right ways – she’s a pie that’s fun to ride, but you wouldn’t want your CSA friends to see you on her.

Also, the driver texted me the photo at the bottom here when my pizza was en route. This guy is a marketing genius. Seriously – what a small thing to do to make your business and pizza stand out.
