From gibberish-speaking creatures to the heartbreaking story of a star, this weekend is full of cinematic treats at Regal Atlantic Station!
A crazed spin-off film of Despicable Me, featuring the loveably awkward and cute Minions, should have been a sure bet from the first time audiences met the little guys. n their first feature-length adventure, aptly titled Minions, we learn the journey from the beginning of time to the 1960s as the little yellow guys, most notably three named Stuart, Kevin, and Bob, go on a search to find the most ruthless evil mastermind to serve. Scarlett Overkill becomes the nemesis they most admire and it’s a race for survival in posh London and other familiar locales to the very end. Featuring the voices of superstars like Sandra Bullock, Minions could easily become the family film hit of the summer. Missing the sentimental note that a film like Inside Out possesses, though, could hurt its chances in the long run.
While families will be packing the seats for Minions, a few adult-focused films will be hoping for a notice or two, as well. Ryan Reynolds stars in Self/less, a sci-fi thriller that isn’t receiving too many good remarks from critics, with many noting that the premise is promising, but the execution is lackluster.
Horror fans may be drawn to new flick The Gallows after its terrifying trailer debuted a few months ago. But, as is natural for scary films, critics are ripping apart the found-footage thrill ride. There are scares to be had here, but the film doesn’t quite live up to its pretentious plot.
And, lastly, but perhaps most notably, the documentary Amy is receiving high marks from critics and audiences worldwide. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May to a standing ovation. Following the rise and fall of Grammy award-winner Amy Winehouse, the film is eye-opening and troubling as you witness the star go from rebellious, good-natured teen, to a drug-addicted mess. While her music is mesmerizing, the journey to get there is terrifying and sad. This documentary is receiving lots of praise. Look for it to show up as a contender for next year’s Academy Award for Best Documentary.
